Our home is located within a co-housing community called “Sharingwood”. The community collectively owns and maintains 39 acres of forest/greenbelt with trails that surround the homes in the community. There are also several other common elements like a common house (for community gatherings/meals/festivities), playfield, playground, community garden and a recycling center.

Living in a co-housing community is not like living in a regular neighborhood where you may or may not get to know your neighbors. In co-housing, everyone knows everyone, and they choose to work together to maintain the community, as well as relationships within the community.

Each adult member of the community (renters and owners alike) is expected to participate in two community teams or to be a convener of one team. Team signups occur once per year and there are a wide variety of teams to choose from.

By virtue of choosing to do things together, sharing meals together, participating in community led activities and supporting other community members in their time(s) of need, all residents have the chance to get to know and support each other.
Each property owner owns a home and a piece of land that the home sits on, as well as a share of the communal areas described above.

We are looking for renters who would be interested in not only renting a home in a beautiful setting but be willing to participate in the community and help it to thrive.

There is no religious, political, or spiritual agenda, but rather an intention to live in community and communicate with one another.

When inquiring about the rental, please tell us about yourself/yourselves and your pet (if you have one). Also, please tell us why you would like to live in a co-housing community, which features/activities of the community sound interesting to you and what you feel you could bring to the community. If you are interested in seeing the community and learning more about it prior to applying, please reach out to arrange a tour.

Requirements:

  • Renter pays all utilities (water, gas, electricity, garbage/recycling and internet).
  • Absolutely no smoking.
  • One pet (small dog only; no cats or other animals) considered on a case-by-case basis with an additional, and refundable, pet deposit. Note: Dogs must be leashed at all times when outside and are NOT allowed in the greenbelt that surrounds the community as this is a nature conservancy area. There are also no fences or dog runs allowed in the community, so dogs must be kept inside during the day when tenants are not home.
  • Tenants must be willing to do minor home upkeep tasks on their own including, but not limited to:
    • Changing smoke alarm batteries
    • Changing light bulbs
    • Changing the furnace filter every 3 months
    • Unclogging toilets
    • Securing food in appropriate containers to minimize rodent visitors.
    • This home is IN the forest, so there are mice. If you are not comfortable with setting traps and dealing with the occasional rodent visitor, then please do not submit an application.
    • Tenants must keep the home and yard tidy and allow landlords access to the home upon request (i.e. to take care of maintenance issues or tend to the landscape). Landlords will make every effort to communicate this need to the tenants at least 48 hours prior to needing entry.
